What is Home Health Care?
In home care refers to any type of care that is provided for the client within their own home, whether it be medical or non-medical in nature. In most cases, in home care is a way for seniors who need basic help to stay in their homes instead of having to transition into a nursing home or senior facility. Most people prefer to stay in the comfort of their own home as they get older or have special needs but doing so comes with certain challenges. The home care services offered at Nova Home Care & Staffing can mitigate some of the stress of everyday activities.
What Do Home Health Care Services Include?
Home health care is designed to help older adults remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible, even with disability, illness, or injury. It covers a wide range of services which can delay the need for long-term nursing home care.
On top of providing assistance with general home care needs such as cleaning and meal prep, home health care can often include more specialized services such as physical therapy, speech therapy, and skilled nursing. While home health care can include basic home care services, the medical aspect is what makes home health care a more specialized service. Home health care professionals are generally licensed nurses, therapists, or home health aides which allows them to provide specialized care that could not be provided by a standard home care provider.
Some of the basic tasks we we can assist with include:
- Dressing
- Bathing
- Light meal preparation
- Cleaning
- Medication reminders
- Assistance with some of their daily living activities

What is Home Care Nursing?
Home care nursing is a type of in home health care that utilizes the specialized medical knowledge of skilled nurses. Skilled nurses can provide many services that other home care staff are not legally able to provide.
Skilled nursing care is a high level of medical care that must be provided by licensed health professionals, such as registered nurses (RNs) and physical, speech, and occupational therapists. These services can be necessary over the short term for rehabilitation from an illness or injury, or they may be required over the long term for patients who need a high level of care on a frequent or constant basis due to a chronic medical condition. Examples of skilled nursing services include wound care, intravenous (IV) therapy, injections, catheter care, physical therapy, and monitoring of vital signs and medical equipment.
Some of the advanced medical tasks our skilled nursing care staff are trained and certified to perform include the following:
- Diabetes Management
- Medication Management
- Wound Care
- Tracheostomy Care
- Ventilator-Dependent Care
- Infusion Therapy
- Pediatric Care
- New Mother/Baby Care
- Family Respite Care & More
- Continual RN assessments of client’s care and needs
How Long Does In Home Health Care Last?
In home care is extremely flexible in nature – it can vary greatly based on a person’s unique needs. Some people may only require a caregiver a few days a week for an ongoing period of time. Some people may need a little extra help while recovering from an ailment or after a surgery. Some home care providers may have a minimum hourly commitment to start care, or require you to sign a contract for a certain duration of time, so it’s important to ask any provider you consider. Every person’s case is different and every client will get the specific care they need and deserve.
How Can I Tell If Someone Needs Home Health Care Assistance?
Many older people remain very independent as they age, but even if it is not immediately clear there may be some signs that they could benefit from using a home health care agency. Some of the things you should look for include:
- Is the house tidy?
- Are there adequate groceries (not just frozen dinners)?
- Have you noticed any weight loss?
- Has personal hygiene declined?
- Does the person seem lonely or withdrawn?
- Are there any concerns with memory?
Is Home Health Care Available 24 Hours a Day 7 Days a Week?
At Nova Home Care & Staffing we have team members available to provide care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Some clients require overnight care for their own safety and well being. We’re proud to be around whenever you need us.
While there are many home care agencies out there that only operate during the day, Nova Home Care realizes that the need for high quality caregivers does not go away when the sun sets. Our team of skilled caregivers and nurses are available around the clock to provide our comprehensive services.
How Much Does In Home Care Cost?
The cost of home health care services will ultimately depend on a number of factors. How many hours will the caregiver need to be available? What specific services are being provided during the home health care period? Patients that require more specialized and focused care will have a higher cost associated with the time they are spending with a client. Skilled nurses, for example, can provide medical care that cannot be provided by a home health aide which makes their hourly rates higher.
Each client that we work with at Nova Home Care has a unique situation. Everyone has specific needs and medical requirements. Some services may be covered by insurance, veterans benefits, etc. To find out how much home health care services will cost for a specific case, reach out to Nova today to discuss your needs.
Where Can We Get More Information on Home Care Assistance for Veterans and Their Spouses?
Nova supports veterans benefits and find that they are severely underused when they can be utilized to help with the costs of in home care for veterans and their spouses. You can visit the veterans affairs benefits page to learn more about what they can cover when it comes to in home care services. VA benefits must be applied for, so it is a good idea to do that before reaching out to home care agencies. If you qualify, the money provided by veterans benefits can be used toward in home care, assisted living assistance, or nursing home care.
Do You Provide Services for Individuals in Nursing Homes or Assisted Living Communities?
Yes, Nova’s caregivers are available to provide companionship or personal health care services to those in nursing homes or assisted living communities who may be interested in more focused attention and personalized care.

Who Comes Into My House to Provide Home Health Care?
Different types of care require different certifications and training. Depending on your specific needs, the caregivers and clinicians coming into your home can vary. You could have different caregivers at different times of the day, week, or month as part of your care. Personal care and senior companion care services are most often provided by a home health aide (HHA) or certified nursing assistant (CNA). Private duty nursing care and home health care services are provided by registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs), physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), or speech language pathologists (SLPs).
Will the Same Caregiver(s) Come for Every In Home Care Visit?
In general we set our clients up with a consistent caregiver that will oversee their care as scheduled. If your usual caregiver is unavailable (due to sickness, being on vacation, etc.) we have a team of caregivers that can take over as needed. In these situations you will be notified in advance.
Does Home Health Care Provide Transportation for Doctors’ Appointments?
Transportation, especially to medical appointments and procedures, is a popular home care service. Clients sometimes cannot drive themselves to appointments so this service is important to their overall health and wellbeing. It can often be arranged in a few hours, but the more notice given is always better. A regular planned schedule can be set up, or the caregiver can be used on an “as needed” basis.
Are Home Health Care Services Just for Seniors?
While home health care is often used to help seniors, it can also be used for people with disabilities who need a helping hand around the house. A home health aide can also be helpful during post-op recovery where your loved one is bedridden for an extended period of time. Having post-op care provided in your home can help with recuperation and establish normality as quickly as possible.
What is the Difference Between Assisted Living and Home Health Care?
In-home care is offered in a variety of specialized services, but always takes place in the home of the person that requires a caregiver. Typically this will be for several hours a day or a few times a week depending on the person’s needs.
Assisted living differs from home health care in that it requires moving from the family home into a new facility. These new facilities offer more freedom than a nursing home but are still structured to meet the needs and preferences of many seniors.
Seniors who prefer to live in their own home would benefit the most from in-home care services.
What is the Difference Between Home Care and Home Health Care?
Home care and home health care sound similar, and many of the services provided in each do overlap. However, home care places a focus on non-clinical help, such as meal prep and companionship, while home health care provides professional medical assistance. If a senior doesn’t have any specific medical needs, but could use help around the house, basic home care services are a great option. Those with specific medical needs may need a more experienced medical professional to provide care, which is when home health care should be considered.
Can I Get Non-Medical Home Care Services?
Yes, in fact many people who benefit from home care are using the service in a non-medical nature. Companion care is one of the most important services available as it can play a critical role in assisting seniors in maintaining their independence, allowing them to continue to live in the comfort of their own homes. Non-medical care can provide peace of mind for family members, knowing that their loved ones have someone supervising them and helping with basic activities around the house and providing them a person to talk to and spend time with. Loneliness is a major problem for older people who live alone and companion care is a great way to help seniors avoid the potentially negative effects of being alone.
Is Home Health Care or a Home Health Aide an Option for Short Term Disability or Recovering From a Surgery?
While many people who require home care need it for the long haul, post-operative care is a short term option for those with a disability or have recently had surgery and will be unable to carry out their normal routine around the house. The experienced health aides and nurses at Nova are available to help out for as long as it takes clients to get back on their feet.
Can I Get Skilled Nursing Care at Home?
Yes, Nova Home Care works with many skilled nurses to provide more specialized care to those with conditions that require an experienced medical professional. These services can be necessary over the short term for rehabilitation from an illness or injury, or they may be required over the long term for patients who need a high level of care on a frequent or constant basis due to a chronic medical condition. Examples of skilled nursing services include:
- Wound care
- Intravenous (IV) therapy
- Injections
- Catheter care
- Physical therapy
- Monitoring of vital signs and medical equipment.
How Do Home Health Care Providers Select and Train Their Employees?
While other home health care providers may choose their employees in a different manner, Nova Nursing takes great care and attention when choosing our health care team. All of our staff are bonded and insured. Employees are screened through background checks and receive regular company-provided training.
What Procedures are in Place to Handle Emergencies?
An emergency plan is made and thoroughly discussed with the patient and family during the first visit and is posted in the home and included in the care plan. This is reviewed frequently with the patient and family during the course of our care in the home.
Can You Only Get Home Care in a Private Residence?
No. Home care services can be provided wherever home is—a private residence, a senior living community, or while staying with a friend or family caregiver.
What is The Difference Between a Caregiver and a Home Health Aide?
The job duties for home health aides and personal caregivers are similar. Both work in the client’ residence and provide support with daily tasks. Home health aides are usually qualified or trained to provide simple health services. These services could include helping the client perform rehabilitation exercises, helping them take prescribed medication, or giving pain relief services, like a massage. A home health aide may also be licensed to operate and maintain medical equipment such as oxygen. A personal caregiver is usually not allowed to perform such medical tasks or dispense medication.
Are Nova's Caregivers Bonded and Insured?
Yes, Nova Nursing takes great care and attention when choosing our health care team. All of our staff are bonded and insured. Employees are screened through background checks and receive regular company-provided training.
